Buttermilk Waffles with Caramelized Sugar Coating

I love it when my kids ask to bake or cook something with me.  Sometimes they just make requests for their favorite meals, which is wonderful as well, but it makes me extra happy when they want to get into the kitchen and create something!  My youngest was asking to make homemade waffles this weekend.  She and her siblings have been enjoying real belgian-style waffles almost every Sunday for the past several months.  We've been loyal customers at a waffle stand at our favorite farmer's market.  We all agreed that their waffles were the best we had ever tasted.  Alas, they haven't been there for the past several weeks so we have been missing our favorite waffles.  As we mixed up the batter my youngest suggested that we sprinkle the waffle iron with sugar before we poured on the batter.  She had noticed the waffle maker doing something similar.  WOW!  What a difference it made to have that little coating of caramelized sugar on the waffle.  Can you see it in the picture above?  It really made my favorite waffle recipe even better!  I hope you try it!

Sprinkle heated waffle iron with a teaspoon or so of granulated sugar to get the caramelized sugar coating.  YUM!
