Our Square Foot Garden!

We did it!  My wonderful husband and kids made this on Saturday and filled it on Sunday.  It really went very quickly.  I did help a little but mostly made snacks for the workers and took lots of pictures.  We went to Lowes on Saturday morning to pick up the wood and some paint.  They built the box so quickly that I came out to tell them it was lunch time and they were ready to start painting!  Of course, a table saw and a very handy husband help quite a lot.  Frog and Ladybug boots help a little, too!  I can't wait to use these herbs and veggies in some great summer recipes!

My husband used extra wood to make this compost sifter --we have an awesome pile in our yard!

The perfect square foot garden soil mix:  1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 vermiculite.

They also used some extra wood to make the grid --very important to separate each square foot!

This is my husband's doing --you have no idea how much this little painted duck has annoyed me over the years!

Amanda's Square Foot Garden

This is a great example of square foot gardening.  Square foot gardening is an easy, earth friendly, simple, and fun way to plant a garden.  My neighbor, Amanda, has inspired us to make our own square foot garden!  My husband has a green thumb and loves to work in the yard.  We always had a vegetable garden at our old house because we got lots of great sun.  We have lots of trees (and shade) at our current house so have not attempted a garden until now.  My husband and kids are excited to get working on the boxes --cutting, nailing, and painting is our goal for tomorrow.  If everything goes as planned we will do our planting on Sunday!
